The Japanese telecom carrier KDDI has taken down its “Android au” website, according to a report by Asiajin. The takedown appears to be in anticipation of the arrival of the iPhone 5 on its ‘au’ network in November this year.
The Android au website, which had so far featured videos of the popular Japanese boy band Arashi showing off KDDI’s Android lineup, has been stripped bare and now only shows the phrase “Android(tm) au サイトは終了いたしました。” (translated: “Android au site has finished”). It then redirects visitors to the company’s au website.
The Arashi videos were pretty clearly targeted against the iPhone—by advertising Android smartphones’ ability to play Flash content, for instance—and its rival Softbank, which is currently the only Japanese carrier that has the iPhone. However, it now seems pretty certain that that is soon to change.
Apple is expected to unveil the next generation of the iPhone in an event at the company’s Cupertino campus on October 4, with a keynote headlined by newly installed CEO Tim Cook.
