The BBC Sport app sails past 1M downloads in 7 weeks, as mobile traffic jumps by 12% in 12 months

The BBC has announced that its recently-launched Sport app has hit one million downloads, seven weeks after it first launched for iOS devices.

This figure only refers to UK downloads, but the iOS app has also been available internationally for three weeks, longer than the Android app which has only been available in the UK for less than a week. So it’s safe to assume that the majority of these one million downloads are for Apple devices.

“It’s a huge achievement to reach this milestone so quickly, and is the icing on the cake for a large project to improve BBC Sport content on mobile devices,” says Phil Fearnley, General Manager, BBC News and Knowledge.

To mark this news, the BBC has also noted that January was a record month for total traffic to its Sport portal outside last summer’s Olympics (an event which broke new records in itself), with 42 million unique visitors and over one billion page views. It also points to the growing trends of users accessing BBC Sport via smartphones and tablets, which accounted for 43.4% of the month’s total traffic, up from 31% the previous January.

This is consistent with the trend we were seeing during the Olympics last year, as after the first week it was revealed that 33% of unique browsers accessed the Olympics coverage from a mobile phone and 8% from a tablet.
