BBC Sport launches Android app with stats, news, video and more

BBC Sport has finally launched its free Android app for UK users.  We noted in January that the iOS version had been released and is now available worldwide.

The Android version is now available on Google Play for UK users only (should arrive on the Amazon Appstore soon), and is designed to work with a spectrum of devices up to and including 7-inch tablets.

Users can access news, stats, live scores, commentary and analysis as well as live and on demand video.  Through the app, sports fans can watch the current Rugby Union Six Nations championship and the upcoming Formula 1 season as they please on Android devices. Video is supported on devices running Android version 2.2 and above.

Additional functionality to come will include personal quick links for the main navigation area, team customisation for fans and home screen widgets for updates and highlights at a glance.

The BBC Sport apps have been evolving quickly since their launch. The iOS app saw the arrival of live and on demand video weeks after it arrived in the App Store.

The broadcaster is not without competition though as UK radio station TalkSport recently launched its apps for Android and iOS for English Premier League radio coverage outside of mainland Europe.

It will be interesting to see how BBC Sport’s apps perform when they are all available to a global audience. With tech as a facilitator, the language of sport is bound to travel far and wide.
