‘Infinite storage’ startup Bitcasa hires former Box VP; Horizons’ Frank Meehan joins board

‘Infinite storage’ startup Bitcasa hires former Box VP; Horizons’ Frank Meehan joins board

Bitcasa, the interesting startup that promised to deliver users ‘infinite storage’ when it emerged last year, is today announcing a double win.

The first is its recruitment of Tony Lee, formerly VP of backend engineering at that other hot cloud storage and file sharing startup, Box. The ex-Yahoo director will henceforth serve as Bitcasa’s vice president of engineering.

In addition, Bitcasa announced that Frank Meehan from Asia-based investment firm Horizons Ventures has joined its board of directors. Meehan formerly served on the boards of companies like Spotify and Siri (acquired by Apple), and also has seats on the boards of Summly, Magisto, Fixmo, DoubleTwist and others.

Before becoming an investor, Meehan founded and led INQ Mobile and has held various positions at Hutchison Whampoa and Ericsson across Europe and Asia.

Needless to say, Horizons is an investor in Bitcasa – the firm participated in a recent $7 million financing round together with Pelion Venture Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital, CrunchFund and Samsung Ventures.

Lee, who had served as VP at sorta-kinda rival Box for a little over a year (and is thus now ‘out of the Box’), asserts that Bitcasa is changing the cloud storage landscape by redefining the way data is stored, accessed and shared.

About a month ago, the startup revealed that it already managed over five petabytes of user data as it released a plugin for Google’s Chrome browser.

Bitcasa was founded by former Mastercard and Mozy employees in July 2011 but made its public debut in September 2011 at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference.
