Evernote deal gives 60 million Deutsche Telekom customers 1 year of free premium service

Evernote deal gives 60 million Deutsche Telekom customers 1 year of free premium service

Telecom giant Deutsche Telekom and Evernote this morning announced an agreement that will see the carrier offer its nearly 60 million mobile, broadband and fixed-line customers in Germany one year of Evernote Premium free of charge.

DK customers who already have Evernote Premium can extend their current subscription for a year. The subscription normally costs €40 (or $45) per year and gives users bigger upload capacity, access to note history and offers greater sharing options, among other features.

The offer for Deutsche Telekom subscribers begins today and runs through September 25th, 2014, or 18 months.

Roughly 98 percent of Evernote’s revenue comes from customers upgrading to the premium service, CEO Phil Libin told the Wall Street Journal. He also said Deutsche Telekom was not paying the full amount Evernote normally charges per customer, but declined to share more details about the partnership agreement.

Of Evernote’s existing 50 million users worldwide, over 1.3 million are currently based in Germany, making it Evernote’s second largest market in EMEA, according to the press release.

Obviously, this kind of deal is a great way for Evernote to get its app on the phones of more users and increase the lifetime value of existing customers. For the type of simple but powerful note-taking and ‘memory enhancement’ service Evernote provides, telecom partners can prove to be a valuable distribution channel.

Deutsche Telekom joins Evernote’s other carrier partners, including NTT Docomo in Japan, Orange France, KT in Korea, Taiwan Mobile, and Docomo Pacific.

Interestingly, Libin tells the WSJ that Evernote is not seeking to ink similar deals with any mobile carriers in the United States.

In addition to the premium service deal, Evernote and Deutsche Telekom have teamed up to host the upcoming Evernote Hackathon in Berlin on April 5-7, which will be held at the carrier’s brand new startup space.
