The BBC’s weather app breezes past 1 million downloads, 2 weeks after launch

Earlier this month, the BBC introduced a new standalone weather app for iOS and Android. Three weeks on, the UK broadcaster has announced it has already passed one million downloads across both platforms, just two weeks after launch.

Just to recap, BBC Weather automatically detects your location and gives you an overview of the conditions wherever you may be. While the Web-based version of BBC Weather can offer up to a 10-day forecast, this new native offering is limited to just 5 days, but you can also drill down for information on UV, pollen count, wind speed and humidity. For UK locations, you can view forecasts by the hour for the next 48 hours, whereas towns and cities outside Britain are viewable by 3-hourly intervals.

The BBC says the native app has driven its mobile visits up from 20% to 25% of its total Weather traffic. And so you can sleep well tonight, it seems that 6am-9am is the peak period for those checking the forecast, with about 28 requests per second.

James Metcalfe, senior product manager for the BBC Weather website, says that they’ve received a tonne of feedback thus far which will be used in future iterations of the app. “All the feedback has been extremely valuable and we’re already starting to address some of it,” he says.

“It’s clear that many Android users like the homescreen widget, but would also like a variety of widget sizes and we hope to introduce these soon,” Metcalfe continues. “We are also looking at ways to improve how the app finds and displays your location.”
