Sony announced two new Playstation 4 consoles today: the 4K-capable Playstation 4 Pro, and a slimmer version of the current Playstation 4 that ships without 4K support.
The Playstation 4 Pro (turns out “Neo” isn’t the name) offers 4K and HDR support. To do this, the Pro sports a more powerful CPU and GPU, and also includes a one terabyte hard drive. The Pro is compatable with current Playstation 4 titles, but only some titles will take advantage of the 4K and HDR capability. IGN is reporting a limited list of titles with 4K support:
- Spider-Man
- For Honor
- Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
- Rise of the Tomb Raider
- Days Gone
- Watch Dogs 2
- Farpoint
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered
- Call of Duty: Black Ops III
- FIFA 17
- Battlefield 1
- Mass Effect Andromeda
The Playstation 4 Pro is available on November 10 for $399.
This kind of partial upgrade is unusual in the console market, but Sony isn’t alone here: Microsoft is working on a similar upgrade for the XBox One.
The Playstation 4 Slim, meanwhile, is identical to the Playstation 4 currently on the market (meaning no 4K) but comes in a smaller form factor. We’ve known about the slimmer model for weeks, but nothing was official until now.
The new, slimmer Playstation 4 will cost $299, and goes on sale September 15 in most markets.
Sony usually releases a slimmer version of their consoles a few years after launching them, typically without new features. So the slim Playstation 4 isn’t much of a surprise, the 4K-ready Playstation 4 Pro certainly is.
Sony seems to be going out of their way not to brand the Pro as a new console, and they’ve confirmed that upcoming titles will run on the existing Playstation 4 — just not in 4K.
