Snapchat is fast becoming one of the most popular publishers in the App Store, despite only offering a single app to iOS users.
A report by app ranking and intelligence firm App Annie, which examined the number of downloads for all apps excluding games throughout March, found that Snapchat had jumped more than 20 places to become the 10th most popular publisher in the App Store.
Google, Apple and Facebook round out the top three, but what’s notable is that Snapchat has created this success from a single product. Google offers 29 apps, Apple boasts 19 and Facebook has 6, covering a range of different services in comparison.
The rest of the leaderboard is made up of other publishers with even higher app counts; Tencent has a formidable 111 apps in 5th, while NHN offers 185 back in 8th.
Much of Snapchat’s growth was attributed to users in the United Kingdom, according to App Annie. That’s not surprising, given the app’s international popularity and the widespread coverage that has followed regarding ‘sexting’.
Monthly revenue is a different story, however. Apple tops the list here, with NHN and Pandora residing in second and third place respectively. MLB.com is a new entrant though, jumping 13 places due to the success of MLB.com At Bat, a subscription-based service that lets users watch Major League Baseball games on the move.
MLB.com also jumped 46 places to rank 10th in the Google Play store, when looking at the top publishers by monthly revenue, excluding games throughout March.
App Annie also discovered that the interest in personalized Internet radio service Pandora is on the rise. The company climbed to 8th, up 21 places from February, for monthly revenue in the Google Play store throughout March.
Other music streaming services, such as Last.fm, Spotify and Rdio, didn’t even feature in the top 10. It’s a surprising state of affairs, given that Pandora is only available in its full capacity to users in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
While Spotify and Rdio continue to grab headlines – the former expanded into 8 new markets earlier this month, while the latter launched a social TV service called Vdio – revenue and sustained growth is an altogether different beast. In this regard, it seems Pandora is doing rather well.
