Already available on iOS and Android, second screen social TV app Zeebox is now available on BlackBerry smartphones, launching on the BlackBerry App World today.
Supported by devices running BlackBerry OS 6 and above, Zeebox isn’t going to have the range of features available to it that are included in its iOS and Android counterparts. This is mainly down to RIM’s apparent inability to quickly iterate its BlackBerry platform to compete with Apple and Google and — more recently — shifting all resources over to the development of BlackBerry 10 devices and software.
However, the app still provides its TV guide functionality, allowing users to search by buzz around particular programmes and see what their friends, family and favourite celebrities are watching.
Also included are Zeebox’s chat features, integrating with Facebook and Twitter, allowing users to invite their friends to watch programmes with them, as well as e-commerce links to products related to shows (video-on-demand content is coming soon).
Now operating in the UK, US, Australia and the Republic of Ireland, Zeebox has been updating its apps to integrate with Sky and Virgin Media set-top boxes in the UK, operating as a remote control and providing more functionality to its popular app.
Zeebox also allows some broadcasters to create dedicated interactive experiences that viewers can access by ‘checking in’ to particular shows via the app. This has led to BSkyB, Comcast, NBCUniversal and Viacom backing the company, helping it to become the defacto choice for second screen viewing.
Zeebox wouldn’t officially confirm whether the app would come to BlackBerry 10 when new smartphones are released early next year, only teasing that it would “likely” come in the future.
