Zeebox arrives in Australia on Android, iOS, and Web, partners with Network Ten

Second screen service Zeebox has announced that its service has gone live in Australia. You can grabs the apps — which are available for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices — from the Zeebox Australia page, the Web-based service is also up and running.

Zeebox CEO & co-founder Ernesto Schmitt brought news of the launch of the service in Australia — a move that was first announced back in July — via Twitter:

The service has gone live some time later than the original September date that Zeebox communicated back in July. Network Ten, the Australian commercial television network, is already confirmed as a backer, after it made a “substantial investment” in the venture, and the firm says that other strategic partners will be announced in due course.

“Zeebox knows what’s happening on the show you’re watching and opens up that world to you. With search, recommendations, social connectivity and ecommerce functions all built into the one app, it will be Australian’s first truly integrated second-screen experience, making TV even better,” said Zeebox Australia CEO, Craig Blair, in the official announcement.

For those who don’t know, Zeebox is a social site with apps for mobile devices that provides contextual information second-by-second as people watch TV.

Launched in October 2011, it is used by people who want to watch the shows with their friends and/or who want augmented information on what is seen and heard within the broadcast. The company has previously agreed deals with Sky — which took a 10 percent stake in the company — and Mobile Interactive Group, which added payments and voting features into the app.

Although Zeebox first debuted in the UK, it finally expanded into the US two months ago. Now it has arrived in Australia; can we start taking bets on when it will arrive in Canada and other parts of the world?
