Pinterest for Android and iOS get push notifications, predictive search results and friend mentions

Pinterest for Android and iOS get push notifications, predictive search results and friend mentions

Pinterest has updated its iOS and Android apps today with a bunch of new features including push notifications, auto-suggestions when searching throughout the apps, and the ability to send pins to other users.

The new search functionality is arguably the most useful. Simply hit the magnifying glass icon in the bottom toolbar and enter a query in the text box at the top of the screen. Pinterest will automatically suggest relevant results based on what the user is typing; it’s a small addition, but one that significantly ramps up the speed at which users can navigate the app and discover new content.

“You can also see recent searches you made from other places, so if you searched for a soup recipe from your computer, you can do the same search when you’re at the grocery store with just your phone to help you,” a blog post on the Pinterest website reads.

Users can also mention other Pinterest users whenever they leave a comment on a pin. As with Twitter and Instagram, simply type the ‘@’ symbol, followed by the start of the relevant recipient’s username to see a list of accounts.

We would expect this feature to be included in pin captions too, but in our initial tests this wasn’t supported on iOS.

The updated app also makes it easier to create collaborative boards. Users can invite their friends to submit new pins to a specific board simply by hitting the ‘edit’ button from their profile page, followed by the “Who can pin?” option. Again, it’s easy to look up relevant users to invite simply by searching for them with the ‘@’ symbol.

The iOS and Android apps also support push notifications this time around, so users won’t need to worry about manually checking for notifications when they’re busy doing something else.

Today’s update notes for both the iOS and Android apps include an additional feature, which at the time of writing, we’ve been unable to decipher:

“Send a pin to someone and we’ll seal it with love (iPhone & iPod only)”

Know how to get this up and running? Be sure to sound off in the comments section below. The updated app is available right now from Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
