Microsoft just added multi-disc backwards compatibility to the Xbox One

Microsoft just added multi-disc backwards compatibility to the Xbox One

Microsoft’s ever-growing library of backwards compatible games just got a little bigger. Starting with Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut, Xbox One is now capable of multi-disc backwards compatibility.

Of course, it’s just the one game for now, but Microsoft has proved willing to continue adding to its already impressive catalog of backward compatible games.

From a Microsoft spokesperson:

“Yes, ‘Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut’ was the first multi-disc Backward Compatible title added to the program. We know fans were asking for this feature and our engineers worked hard developing a solution to enable it so we could further expand the titles included in Xbox One Backward Compatibility. We’re continuing to listen to our fans on Xbox Feedback and work with our publishing partners to grow out library of Xbox One Backward Compatibility titles and will work to include more multi-disc games.”

Unlike Sony’s PS4, the Xbox One uses emulation software to allow for the play of physical discs (from the Xbox 360) on the current console. Sony, instead, uses its PlayStation Now service to give you backwards compatibility lite, if you will, by allowing users to download select Playstation 2 and 3 games from the cloud. It doesn’t, however, work with discs from the older consoles.

Microsoft’s team has proved willing to continue adding games from its older consoles to its compatibility list — even if they don’t always run smoothly — so we can only hope the multi-disc support continues.
