Kickstarter debuts in Canada, lets you start projects today and launch them as soon as September 9

Kickstarter today announced the crowd-funding service has arrived in Canada. Users can start building their projects right now, and launch them as soon as September 9.

The company also confirmed that there are no plans for a Canada-specific Kickstarter site. Canadian-based projects will be listed alongside all the other Kickstarter projects.

This means individuals outside of Canada will be able to pledge to Canada-based projects. That being said, all Canadian-based projects will be listed in Canadian dollars; if you are pledging from outside of Canada, you will see the approximate conversion rate to US dollars before you complete your pledge.

The only noteworthy difference when it comes to backing Canadian projects is that backers will enter their payment information directly on Kickstarter (to be processed through a third-party payments processor) rather than through Amazon Payments. All other mechanics (all-or-nothing funding, rewards, etc.) are identical.

As for fees, here are the official details:

Are the fees for Canada-based projects the same as UK and US projects?
Yes, Kickstarter will charge a 5% fee to successfully funded projects and no fee to unsuccessfully funded projects in the Canada. Payment processing fees for Canada-based projects are similar to those for US projects. For Canada-based projects, the processing fees are:
Pledges less than $10 are charged 5% + $0.05
Pledges of $10 or greater are charged 3% + $0.20
If a project is not successfully funded, there are no fees.

On June 27, Kickstarter first revealed that Canada would be joining in all the fun this summer, and now it has finally delivered. The company’s first international expansion was to the UK back in October 2012.

If you’re in Canada, to start building a project all you have to do is click on the “Start a new project” button on the Start page. Next month, you will be able to launch your project; Kickstarter will send you an email on Monday letting you know exactly when you can hit the launch button.
