GroupMe gets charitable this holiday season

GroupMe gets charitable this holiday season

With the holidays in full swing, thriving (and morally sound) startups are searching for ways to give back. GroupMe has a history of helping those in need, and continues to do so this winter.

From now through New Year’s Day, GroupMe announced that It will donate $1 to the Food Bank For New York City for each new group created on its special Happy Holidays page. While this is capped by at a $2,000 limit, the spirit is still there. If all goes as planned, nearly 10,000 meals will be provided. GroupMe explains:

For every $1 donated 5 meals can be provided to New Yorkers in need. With your help, we’ll feed thousands of hungry families in New York this winter.

Try starting a group there now and adding the people you’ll be seeing this holiday season. Whether you’re headed home to visit with family or hosting some friends where you live, you’ll all be able to stay in touch easier than ever before. Coordinate flight arrivals, chat about weather reports, and plan who’s bringing what to your celebrations. It’s easier than ever!

GroupMe was on our list of 11 New York City startups to watch in 2011. It won the award for Best Group Messaging App at SXSWi in March, and then was acquired by Skype in August. In other words, it is doing pretty damn good right now.

Sadly, a majority of my family members aren’t the slightest bit tech savvy (think AOL users), which makes group messaging sound like a big headache. That said, GroupMe is perfect for a New Year’s Eve party with friends, and that’s what I recommend it for.
