Apple unveils new iPod touch with 4″ Retina display, Siri and Airplay coming in October

Apple on Wednesday showed off an updated version of its iPod touch with a 4-inch Retina display and the Siri voice assistant. It costs $299 and $399 for 32GB and 64GB, respectively, and is set to arrive in October.

At just 6.1mm thick, the media player is the company’s thinnest iPod touch. It’s also the lightest at just 88 grams. The rear camera is 5 megapixels.

The fifth-generation iPod touch uses an 32nm A5 chip and has an anodized aluminum back. The display is the same as that found on the new iPhone 5. The back plate of the device also comes in five colors: black, silver, blue, red, yellow.

The previous generation iPod touch will sell for 16GB for $199 and 32GB for $249. As of July, Apple had sold 350 million iPods, though it doesn’t break out how many of those are iPod touch units.
