Apple to announce photo-sharing, video syncing services for iOS 6 and iCloud at WWDC

Apple to announce photo-sharing, video syncing services for iOS 6 and iCloud at WWDC

Apple is planning on adding photo-sharing features, as a part of an upgrade of the service, reports the Wall Street Journal. The services, which would be announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference on June 11th, would allow users to share sets of photos and comment on those photos.

These photo-sharing services would allow for other albums or ‘sets’ of photos to be shared, outside of the single Photo Stream currently stored and synced via iCloud. It would also make those photos shareable, rather than a purely simple-sync service.

According to the publication’s sources, there will also be an additional service that will allow users to sync their personal videos with iCloud, likely tying in with Photo Stream. Currently users of iCloud can toggle on the Photo Stream option, which will synchronize photographs across Mac, iPhones, iPod touch and iPad devices. The new service would add video into the mix.

The photo-sharing and video syncing services would also make an appearance in iOS 6, which it says Apple will preview to developers at the conference.

The report also mentions Notes and Reminders access as improvements slated for iCloud.com, a detail reported by Macstories on Friday, which also discovered a ‘developer icon’ of some sort in a beta version of the site. Some of the code on the site also referred to iOS 6, which is widely assumed to be the next version of Apple’s mobile OS.

This also may coincide with rumors that iPhoto for Mac is up for a redesign to make it align with iPhoto for iOS. iCloud features for photo sharing would play nicely with that.

Apple announced in April that some 125 million users had signed up for its iCloud data-syncing service. Apple CEO Tim Cook said in February that its syncing service iCloud now has over 100M users. Just last month, Cook said that the service had 85M users, making this a growth of 15M users in 21 days.

Apple’s WWDC gathering is set for June 11th-June 15th, 2012 and was completely sold out within 2 hours.
