Apple releases OS X 10.8.3, adds Windows 8 Boot Camp support and iSight scanning of iTunes gift cards

Apple has released OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3, updating its desktop operating system with a slew of new features and stability improvements, including support for Windows 8 on Boot Camp and scanning iTunes gift cards for the Mac App Store using the built-in camera on a Mac.

Along with official Boot Camp support for Windows 8, the dual-booting tool also now works with Macs with a 3TB hard drive. OS X 10.8.3 also comes with Safari 6.0.3. It’s not a major feature, but new support for scanning iTunes gift cards with a Mac’s built-in camera will be fun to use.

Satbility improvements to the operating system include the fixing of a URL that caused apps to crash, presumably the one we discussed here, as well as changes to Logic Pro, 2011 iMacs, Contacts and Messages.

The newest version of OS X 10.8 follows Apple’s release of Mountain Lion last July and OS X 10.8.2 in September. The company had also released a couple supplemental updates in the interim.

If you already have OS X 10.8, you can find the new software in the personalized Software Update section of the Mac App Store.
