Agile Bits has released version 4 of its 1Password password management app for OS X with more than 90 new features, including shared vaults, 256-bit authenticated encryption and the return of Wi-Fi Sync.
The new 1Password app comes with a cleaner interface in preparation for the upcoming OS X Mavericks release. Users can now create multiple vaults within the app with custom sharing settings. Individual items can also be shared via email or iMessage.
Agile Bits has included numerous security enhancements with the release. Updates include the move to 256-bit authenticated encryption across almost every piece of information in the app. The improved security is intended to future-proof 1Password from unforeseen threats that could come down the road.
1Password 4 still supports iCloud sync, but it also has a Wi-Fi Sync option that avoids transferring through the cloud and instead syncs Macs and iOS devices directly over Wi-Fi.
A menubar utility dubbed 1Password Mini offers quick access to the apps’ key features, including vault search, item details, vault switching and window anchor options.
1Password’s browser extension now supports the Opera browser, and the Mac app has been integrated with third-party apps like Alfred, LaunchBar and Quicksilver.
To mark the release, Agile Bits is offering free upgrades and discounts for version 4. Customers who purchased the app through the Mac App Store can simply download the new software as a free upgrade. Users that bought through Agile Bits’ website in 2013 will also get a free upgrade. Website customers that purchased before 2013 can get the app for $24.99, while new customers can, for a limited time, save $10 off the usual $49.99 price on both the website and the Mac App Store.
Since switching to a new computer late last year, I’d gotten out of the habit of using 1Password. After testing out version 4 for the past few days, I’ve realized just how much I’ve missed the convenience and added security. With lots of new landmark features, this release is a must-upgrade for existing users and a great buy for new customers.
