If you spend a fair amount of time using YouTube’s official app for the iPad, you already know it lacks the ability to design and personalize your video feeds.
Enter VideoHunters for iPad.
VideoHunters changes how we view and discover YouTube videos by providing users with a customizable themes that can be built around specific topics of interest.
There are a variety of ways that users can browse through videos including most discussed, featured, most viewed, top favourited and top rated. There’s also a feature to search through YouTube categories like entertainment and technology, a tool missing within YouTube’s app.
Another cool thing that’s possible in VideoHunter is channel searches, which enables you to look through a list of channels pertaining to any topic. As an example, using the channel search, if you typed in “Apple” you’d be presented with a series of channels dedicated to Apple products and news. And best of all, any channel can be saved as a row within your own theme.
The design of the VideoHunter themes look similar to iPad apps like NPR in the way it displays the content across the screen in horizontal rows. Each row of videos is sorted by topics and can be browsed by sliding your finger across the row. By default, a set of rows have already been created for you but it’s simple to design your own by simply searching a video. Any search results (like channels and categories) can be added as a row within your theme. After you’ve providing VideoHunters with your YouTube credentials, both your uploaded videos and playlists will be included as rows as well.
VideoHunters has created a process for sharing and importing themes through the use of a numeric code. In other words, users can easily send their friends a code which will display your personalized theme within their VideoHunters app. Currently, the app only sends the code via email but Facebook and Twitter sharing options are coming soon.
While watching videos, users can choose to see more related videos or additional videos from the user who published the clip. It’s also able to save the video to favourites and playlists and like YouTube’s app, you’re able to subscribe.
The Bottom Line:
VideoHunters have developed a unique and helpful application for managing and browsing YouTube videos. The ability to have complete control over the way videos are displayed is a major win and it seriously brings efficiency to the business of surfing YouTube. VideoHunters is available for $1.99 in Apple’s app store.
