Viber Media, the startup behind the popular cross-platform messaging and VoIP calling application Viber, is today debuting a new application for Windows Phone 8. Co-founder and CEO Talmon Marco said in a recent tweet that the Viber app for WP8 would be arriving in ‘March or April’, so this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.
Viber, which boasts 175 million users worldwide, had previously launched an application for Windows Phone that didn’t support voice calling.
The new app, which you can download here, offers both free text and photo messaging, as well as free VoIP calls, making it far more useful.
The application also comes with an interface that has been especially tailored for the latest generation of Windows Phone devices, including a native call screen and support for ‘live tiles’ that allow users to see their latest messages and other information straight from their home screen.
The app is free and supports group conversations of up to 40 people, location sharing and support for 30 languages.
On the Windows Phone platform, Viber will have to compete against other communication apps like Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook, Kik Messenger, WeChat, Line and Hike. Against mobile carriers too, but yeah.
In addition to Windows Phone, Viber Media offers apps for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Symbian and Nokia S40 handsets.
