Uber has branched out from providing on-demand rides for passengers to offer on-demand product deliveries for people living in Washington DC as part of an experimental service.
Starting today, Uber users can request items like “allergy medicine, diapers, toothpaste and over 100 other items” through the Uber app. All you need to do is toggle to the ‘Corner Store’ option and select a delivery location within the operational area, then, if a driver is available, Uber will send you a message with a link to items available for purchase.
As with other Uber payments, no cash is required and users are charged directly from their Uber account. There’s not even a delivery fee.
Operating only in parts of Washington DC between the hours of 9AM and 9PM, the company said it’s a time-limited experiment that will run for only “a few weeks”. However, it also said that the more it gets used, the more likely it will become a regular feature.
It’s not the first time that Uber has toyed with deliveries, it already offers an experimental bike-based delivery service in parts of New York City.
