US President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson will meet tech chief executives to discuss artificial intelligence on Tuesday, 29 September, Axios reported the plans on Thursday, citing a source familiar with them.

A source also confirmed the date to Reuters, while ABC News said multiple people familiar with the arrangements had described the meeting to it.

No outlet has named the companies taking part or published an agenda, and we have not independently verified the reports.

The White House did not immediately respond when ABC News asked about the meeting.

Johnson has been asking for a gathering of this kind for weeks. In mid-September, he said he would recall the House only if there was a solution to vote on. Before that, he wanted a summit with the president, leaders of Congress and the heads of the major labs.

“There’ll be a deliberate discussion about the responsibility of the companies to maintain safety,” Johnson told reporters last week, ABC News reported.

The meeting follows calls earlier this month from the leaders of several AI companies, among them OpenAI and Anthropic, to slow the pace of development.

Trump rejected those warnings, describing them in a social media post as a hoax.

He kept to that line when addressing the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, telling world leaders he opposed any global scheme to control the technology, according to Reuters. Last week he also said he would set up what he called an AI Force and appoint a new AI czar.

Meanwhile, pressure on Congress to act has grown. House Democrats urged Johnson to cancel the recess and hold votes on AI safeguards, but the House has left Washington until after the midterm elections in November.

Further details, including the list of attendees, were not immediately available.
