Channel 4 has finally launched a native Android app for its catch-up TV service 4oD, almost a year-and-a-half after it landed on iPhone for the first time, having previously been available for iPad.
As with the iOS incarnation, you can browse content on the Android version over your mobile network (3G/4G), but to watch video you must be connected to WiFi.
The app will require Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above, and is free to access programmes from Channel 4, E4 and More4 over the past 30 days. This content is available to watch free of charge (ad-supported), and there’s no inherent restrictions to how much you watch.
While 4oD has been viewable on Android devices previous via the mobile site, it does require the Flash plugin which is no longer available on Google Play and it’s not easy to get Flash supported on modern Android devices.
While you can browse by category, date and alphabetically, Channel 4 has also made a ‘Collections’ tab available, which surfaces some of its best archived shows since its inception more than 3 decades ago.
The latest native Android-optimized app will be a welcome addition to its existing armory of apps, which includes mobile, desktop and games consoles.
