Tencent adds Disney, Pixar and Marvel blockbusters to its movie streaming service in China

Tencent adds Disney, Pixar and Marvel blockbusters to its movie streaming service in China

Chinese Internet giant Tencent, which owns the popular messaging service WeChat, announced today that it has partnered with Disney Studio to stream films from Disney, Pixar or Marvel Studios on its Chinese online movie service “Hollywood VIP“, beefing up the company’s online video content.

Subscribers of Hollywood VIP have on-demand access to more than 1,500 movies either via a monthly subscription or on a pay-per-movie basis. Tencent’s latest move to boost its content gives weight to how video is the next battleground for Chinese Internet giants.

The movie service will now feature movies from the blockbuster Disney stable including ‘The Avengers’, ‘Toy Story 3’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.  There are already movies on Hollywood VIP from a number of other studios including Lionsgate, Miramax, Universal and Warner Bros. Sun Zhong Huai, the vice president of Tencent, says that hundreds of thousands of repeat customers have been chalking up millions of views on its film service since its launch early this year.
