The death of Osama Bin Laden late last night immediately sparked a huge wave of social media updates and blog posts, demonstrating graphically how the way news spreads has been altered since 9/11. One of the casualties of war is the popular Disqus comment system which is used by many major sites.
Disqus has posted a message that the traffic in it’s system has been so high that they’ve been forced to temporarily disable comment counting in the embedded comment module that many popular sites use for user feedback.
Comment counts have been temporarily disabled to compensate for abnormally high traffic. We’ll have it running again as soon as this stabilizes, and we appreciate your patience and understanding.
The incredible volume of replies to posts about Osama’s death is the likeliest cause as it is no doubt one of the biggest national stories since the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001.
The near instantaneous and continuous response to stories about the attack has once again shown that the way that news is broken and consumed has been forever altered by the blogosphere and social media.
