Today, National Geographic Traveler and app developer Fotopedia are launching a brilliant new iOS app for wanderlust enthusiasts, called “Above France.” The new app provides a bird’s eye view of France’s beauty including a stunning collection of more than 2,000 photographs taken by helicopter pilot and professional photographer, Frank Mulliez.
The app gives users an aerial tour of France’s vistas, from l’Aiguille du Midi to the Chateau d’Yquem, including the most spectacular abbeys, beaches, bridges, castles, cliffs, harbors, lakes, waterfalls, windmills and islands (yes, France has islands! says the American. Proof pictured below). The app is like taking a helicopter ride across the country while sitting on your living room sofa.

The app is filled with slideshows and wallpapers, and is aimed at wanderlust travelers, photography enthusiasts, educators and anyone who needs a “vacation.” The app’s navigation features smart tags, search and interactive maps, a Trip Builder to create easy-to build personalized virtual tours or real trips and all the social media capabilities to share favorite photos via email, Facebook and Twitter.
“This is France from the air. It’s all here‚ from Mont Blanc to the historic abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, the castles of the Loire Valley and the rooftops of Paris. This is France like you haven’t seen it — for you to discover without leaving the ground,” said Keith Bellows, editor-in-chief of National Geographic Traveler.
This is the second app jointly launched by National Geographic Traveler and Fotopedia. Last month, we wrote about their collaborative app called “Dreams of Burma,” which included 1,000 stunning photographs of Burma, virtual excursions, trip-building capabilities, social tools for sharing photos, beautiful slideshows and wallpapers.
Above France is one of many Fotopedia apps, which are less applications and more the future of what coffee table books used to be. The app acts like a book that you open to relax and discover new things that you will find yourself coming back to regularly. On average Fotopedia users spend more than 20 minutes in each application, which is an eternity in a market of immediacy.
