There’s no shortage of news curation apps out there – from 100% human-powered Web apps, to automated social media mining tools that promise to bring you the news you really want to read.
The latest app that offers to help us sift through the rubble and surface golden news nuggets is MustKnow News, an iOS app available in nine editions: Canada, USA, Germany, UK, Spain, France, Italy, Australia and Japan.
“MustKnow is the friendliest and quickest way to find and read the top-10 most important news stories, of the hour, in a range of countries and categories,” says the app’s developer Reut Shany.
“Unlike other news apps that bring plenty of content from a large number of RSS feeds or a user’s Facebook or Twitter streams, MustKnow focuses on bringing users only the top 10 most important stories,” continues Shany. “This helps users deal with information overload and allows them to stay up-to-date in no time.”
When you first launch the app, you’ll be asked to select which edition you’d like to read. Once you’re in, you’ll see that the interface is actually really nice, and I’d put it up there with the likes of News Republic in terms of design.
Each edition of the app covers the likes of National News, Politics, World News, Elections (US edition), Technology and Business, whilst Sports, Entertainment and Health requires upgrading to the pro version. The standard edition of the app costs you $1.99, whilst the full upgrade will set you back a further $1.99.
The app is updated each hour with fresh content as the top stories of the day evolve, and you can actually go back in time (well, to March 2012) to see what the top 10 stories were on a specific day.
As with any app worth its salt, MustKnow lets you easily share across the social sphere, including to Twitter, Facebook, Email, Instapaper, ReadItLater (now Pocket), Tumblr and more.
Whilst it is a nice app, the likes of News Republic, whilst not exactly the same proposition, might appeal to more people given that it’s free.
