For those of us who have fallen in love with the Motorola Android devices, there’s some welcome news today. Verizon will start taking pre-sale orders for the DROID 2 tomorrow. According to a press release, DROID 2 will be shipping with Android 2.2 (FroYo) and have Flash Player 10.1 integrated from first boot.
As for the features? The new DROID has a 3.7″ screen, 5 megapixel camera, 3G mobile HotSpot ability and comes with an 8 GB microSD card pre-loaded.
We’ve also learned some solid pricing information: $199 (on a new 2 year contract) with a $100 mail-in rebate from Verizon, with a required data plan of $29.99/month. If you want HotSpot function, that will set you back an extra $20 but gives the ability to use your phone as a wireless access point for up to 5 devices.
If you happen to be a die-hard Star Wars fan, be on the lookout for the R2-D2 Droid, coming in September. We’re told that the limited-edition phone will have “exclusive Star Wars content and external hardware designed to look like the trusty Droid from the film saga”.
It’s worthy of a mention, as well, that Verizon is offering an interesting upgrade option. For users who have contracts that end by December 31st, you’ll be able to upgrade to any smartphone (including the DROID 2 of course) without penalty.
You’ll pardon me while I go gather up $199 worth of loose change…
