Samsung has picked London for its summer showcase, and it wants you expecting something folded differently. Beyond the date and a teaser, though, the company has confirmed very little.
Galaxy Unpacked runs on Tuesday, 22 July, at 2pm BST, streamed on Samsung’s site and YouTube, CNET notes. The official tagline reads “a new shape unfolds.” Everything below is leak, not spec sheet.
The headliner: a wider Z Fold 8
The star is the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Leaks describe a wider, shorter “passport” body, with a roughly 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch inner display. That breaks from the tall, narrow shape every Fold has used since 2019.
The headline fix is the crease. Samsung has teased a new hinge it calls Flex Titanium, which reports link to a far less visible fold line, as The Gadgeteer details. It builds on Samsung’s own display work. Inside, expect a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, up to 1TB of storage, and a slightly bigger battery.
Two Folds, and a Flip that may be the last
The naming is a mess. Multiple reports say Samsung will ship two book-style foldables this year. The taller, classic successor may wear a Z Fold 8 Ultra badge, while the wider model takes the plain name. If so, it is the first time Samsung has built two Folds for two buyers at once.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is the quieter update, tipped with a 4.1-inch cover and a bigger battery. Its real story is existential. Several reports suggest it could be Samsung’s last clamshell if the lineup is consolidated.
Watches, and the glasses wild card
On wrists, the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 leads. Leaks point to a brighter screen, a bigger battery, dive-ready water resistance, and even dedicated on-device AI silicon. A wider Galaxy wearable push is clearly under way.
The wild card is a pair of AI glasses. Reports say the long-rumoured eyewear runs Google’s Android XR with Gemini built in, co-designed with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, and aimed at Meta’s smart glasses. As Android Central reports, a reveal would still be a genuine surprise.
The price problem
Money is the sore point. Leaked figures put the standard Fold 8 between $1,899 and $1,999, the Fold 8 Ultra near $2,099, and the Flip 8 around $1,099, Digital Trends reports, with storage tiers creeping higher.
That tracks a broader squeeze. A memory-chip crunch has pushed component costs up across the industry, and Samsung already raised Fold prices in April. Foldables are getting better. They are not getting cheaper.
Why the venue matters
The location is a signal too. This is Samsung’s first summer Unpacked in the UK capital, a nod to Europe as a launch stage. It caps a busy week, days after Samsung launched its first US credit card.
