LoveFilm brings BBC video-on-demand content to Germany

Online movie rental service LoveFilm announced that it has 2m members back in January, on the same day Netflix launched in the UK to challenge the Amazon-owned DVD and movie-streaming service.

Whilst it had significant traction in the UK prior to Netflix, it’s easy to forget that LoveFilm isn’t a UK-only service, and also serves Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. So when LoveFilm announced its partnership with BBC Worldwide, the UK broadcaster’s commercial arm, back in January, it was only a matter of time before the content started to flow.

Whilst BBC programming is available in all its markets on DVD, as MediaBiz reports [German], LoveFilm subscribers in Germany can now access BBC content through its video-on-demand (VoD) service.

At the time of writing, there are 294 BBC titles available through LoveFilm Germany, including Fawlty Towers, Doctor Who and Top Gear. The content is available at no additional charge to all subscribers on one of the VoD packages.

BBC Worldwide rolled out its iPlayer service to eleven European countries, including Germany, last July, and whilst some content is available for free, full access for users will set them back €6.99 a month. So depending on how much you love BBC content, you can access some BBC programmes in Germany through LoveFilm, or a more extensive archive through iPlayer. Or you can sign-up to both.
