Marathon Man
When a flick involves an Oscar winner (Dustin Hoffman), a historic Nazi and an international conspiracy, you know it’s going to be a good one. Based on the 1976 flick, Marathon Man details the cat-and-mouse game of graduate student and marathon runner and Nazi fugitive, named Christian Szell.
Chilling, but also eerily on-point. Our recommendation: make popcorn before you pop this DVD in, because you won’t be able to stop watching.
Forrest Gump
Can we get a collective ‘awww’? By now you know the story: Gump, born in the deep South, has a less- than-average IQ, and a girl crush named Jenny. Fast forward 20 years, and Gump has had a front row seat to his era’s major milestones (the Vietnam War, post-war at the Washington Monument, and the raging, drug-infused ‘60s, to name a few), but still can’t forget the girl. Also, he’s a long distance runner and Apple investor.
This movie will make you laugh, and then it will make you cry. Hey, we warned you.
Rocky
To say Rocky is a timeless classic wouldn’t really do the film justice.
Everyone’s given up on part-time boxer, full-time fighter Rocky…including Rocky. The Philly native is buried in debt and running up a hefty hit list on behalf of loan sharks who are keeping him afloat financially. Apollo Creed, renowned boxer and Bicentennial competitor, needs a chump he can knock out during the first few minutes in the ring. Rocky took a chance – what did he have to lose? Interestingly enough, Rocky and Sylvester Stallone’s outlooks weren’t all that different for the film: producers took a chance on writer/director Stallone for his first-ever film, which made millions even filmed on a tiny budget.
With a killer backstory and a night in the ring that’ll make you feel like you’re there, it’s no wonder this one still tops our list.
Silver Linings Playbook
Bradley Cooper’s character, Pat Solatano, is bipolar with an assault charge to prove it. He’s just leaving a mental illness ward after 8 months in his mom’s beat-up station wagon; simultaneously petrified of seeing his ex-wife, Nikki and desperate to get her back, he does something a little crazy: signs up for a dance competition with sex fiend and widow, Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence).
In an effort to get the love of his life back, Pat discovers something new about himself – and it doesn’t involve medication or therapy.
This Is 40 (Unrated)
Paul Rudd killed it in this one. Pete (Rudd) and Debbie (as Leslie Mann) are having what most people would call a mid-life crisis. This hilarious flick combines romance, toddlers and parenting in a comedian-soaked (Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segel and wild card Megan Fox), unrated film you just gotta see.
