Facebook Places Comes To Android

Facebook Places Comes To Android

Update: we are hearing reports that the new Android app is live in the app store right now.

Facebook is bringing the Places product to its application for Android, unlocking the service to millions upon millions of new users.

What effect this will have on the upstart location applications in the space such as the ever hot Foursquare will be seen over the next several months, as Facebook Places hopefully finds a firm userbase. Places recently launched in the UK.

Of course, it could be an Apple/Orange comparison to put Facebook Places against Foursquare, but there is some overlap, something that for some users might  force them to select a single service for their use. This update will also allow users to take a picture and upload it linked to a specific place.

Groups is also coming to the latest build of Android for Facebook. For continuing coverage of the Facebook event, keep your eyes on /SocialMedia. Oh, and despite all the Groupon love at the event today, we are still curious if Facebook Places is looking to get into deals itself.

When will all this be coming out? We are not sure of the exact launch date, but expect them darn soon. The app does require a manual update.
