BT returns to the UK mobile market with 3 SIM-only tariffs

BT returns to the UK mobile market with 3 SIM-only tariffs

BT, the UK’s incumbent telecom infrastructure owner and national landline provider, today announced its first moves back into offering consumer-facing mobile services with BT Mobile.

Initially, its not offering up hardware, so customers will need to provide their own handsets to take advantage of the SIM-only plans, which start from £5 per month for existing BT Broadband customers. The company said discounts for broadband customers (versus non-customers) would be as high as 50 percent. Handily, they apply to anyone in the household, not just account holders.

The cheapest plan (£5) offers up 500MB of 4G data, unlimited texts and 200 minutes of talk time. The next offers 2GB of data and 500 minutes of talk time for £12 per month (£17 for non-broadband customers). The highest tier offers 20GB of 4G data with unlimited texts and minutes for £20 per month (£25 for non-broadband customers).

To sweeten the deal a little, BT is also offering BT Mobile customers free access to BT Sport (even if they’re not a BT Broadband customer) via their mobile device, thereby providing access to Premier League football matches, albeit on the smallest screen in town.

With BT’s purchase of EE for $19 billion, we can only expect to see an ever increasing consumer offering as it attempts to consolidate the two brands.
