Apple has acquired Perceptio, a startup developing artificial intelligence systems that can run on your smartphone without needing to rely on the cloud, reports Bloomberg.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
What could Apple do with its latest purchase? The company isn’t saying, but it could have something to do with improving image analysis on iPhones and iPads.
Perceptio founders Nicolas Pinto and Zak Stone are big into using deep learning technology to better parse photos for functions like facial recognition. The duo previously released an iOS app called Smoothie to create fun animations from short video clips.
Running these features locally could help Apple minimize the need for storing and transferring data to servers across the globe, increasing privacy and security for customers in the process.
