After refreshing the iPad Air and iPad mini yesterday, Apple has given iMacs a spec bump with new Intel processors and AMD graphics chips after two years. While the iMac Pro didn’t get any upgrades, Apple’s giving an option to consumers to add a bonkers 256GB RAM for $5200.
Base models of the 21.5-inch iMac with a Retina 4K display are now powered by an eighth-gen quad-core i3 processor or an eighth-gen six-core i5 processor. Buyers can also opt for a six-core i7 processor to get more power.
These models have either AMD Radeon Pro 555X GPU or an AMD Radeon Pro 560X pre-installed, with an option to upgrade to Radeon Pro Vega 20 GPU (with 4GB RAM) on the high-end variant. Notably, 21.5-inch iMac’s non-retina version hasn’t received any updates.
It bigger sibling – the 27-inch iMac with a 5K retina display– will get an eighth-gen six-core i5 processor for base models and ninth-gen version of the same processor for the high-end variant. Customers can upgrade to the ninth-gen eight-core i9 processor in the high-end version. You can only add AMD’s Radeon Pro Vega 48 GPU (with 8GB of memory) for $450, on the highest end model.
The new 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display starts at $1,299, and the new 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display starts at $1,799. You can order these today directly from Apple’s website.
As we mentioned earlier, the iMac Pro buyers can now add a 256GB RAM for $5200, along with Pro Vega 64X graphics card for $700.
