Apple has updated its online store and finally confirmed rumours that it would update its 11.6 and 13.3-inch MacBook Air models, introducing faster processors, increased storage capacity and more memory across devices.

The new MacBook Air models do away with the Intel Core 2 Duo processors and introduce Intel’s Dual-Core i5 and i7 chips and introduce a backlit keyboard.

The 11.6-inch base model incorporating a 1.6 GHz processor, 2GB of RAM and 64GB of flash storage starting at $999. Apple’s new top-end 11-inch MacBook Air will powered by a 1.8GHz processor – a first for the 11.6-inch model – with 4GB of inclusive RAM and 256GB of flash storage and will cost $1,199.

The 13.3-inch models are similar in configuration to their 11.6-inch counterparts, with the base configuration including a 1.7 GHz processor, 4GB RAM and 128GB of flash storage costing $1,299.

The most expensive MacBook Air will be powered by a 1.8 GHz processor, include 4GB of RAM will offer 256 GB of flash storage, and will set you back $1,599.

Of course, all of the new devices will be powered by Apple’s new Mac OS X Lion operating system, which launched alongside Apple’s new products via the Mac App Store. All future devices will be powered by Lion but existing Mac owners will need to have at least Snow Leopard running on their computer should they wish to upgrade.
