Apple drops iOS 5.0.1 beta 2 for developers, available as an OTA update

Apple drops iOS 5.0.1 beta 2 for developers, available as an OTA update

Apple has released iOS 5.0.1 beta 2, build 9A404, for developers to download. This beta update contains the same fixes as the previous beta update, which focuses on aiding in improving the iPhone 4S battery life as well as adding multitasking gestures for the iPad 1.

This version of iOS 5.0.1 beta apparently fixes some activation issues that were being incurred with the first beta.

The fixes, which include those introduced in iOS 5.0.1 beta 1, are:

  • Fixes bugs affecting battery life
  • Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
  • Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
  • Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
  • Contains security improvements

There is also a new way for developers to specify cache files that should remain on the device, fixing problems that saw users’ Instapaper libraries being wiped due to lack of space. A new attribute allows developers to specify files that should not be deleted, even in cases of low storage space.

The iOS 5 beta 2 update can be installed as an OTA (over-the-air) update for any running iOS 5.0.1 beta 1. Interestingly, the OTA update size on the iPad 2 seems to be 45.8MB, while the iPhone 4S update downloads the entire image at 800MB. This is counter to the behavior that we saw with OTA updates during the beta of iOS 5, where these updates were in delta-sized bites of 100-150MB or so.

This would indicate that there were enough changes to the iPhone 4S firmware for Apple to warrant pushing the whole image, not just the changes, out over the air.
