At its October media event today in San Francisco, Apple announced nearly two-thirds of devices are currently running iOS 7, or 64 percent to be exact. 200 million iOS devices had updated just five days after launch.
“Customers agree, they love the bold new redesign,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said on stage. In reference to iOS 7’s adoption rate, as well as with a clear jab at Android and Windows Phone, he added:”This blows away the other guys.”
At WWDC 2013 in June, Apple announced it had sold over 600 million iOS devices. Apple CEO Tim Cook further added that over 90 percent of iOS users were on iOS 6.
While it’s difficult to compare iOS 6 and iOS 7 adoption rates since Apple doesn’t release updates at regular intervals, it’s clear that in both cases users have grabbed updates rather quickly. It’s unlikely that we’ll see a 90 percent adoption rate for iOS 7 before the end of the year, but it will likely reach the three-quarter mark.
Apple has referred to iOS 7 as “the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone.” We’ll be watching its adoption progress closely.
