Adobe will integrate newly acquired Mixamo 3D tech into Photoshop

Adobe will integrate newly acquired Mixamo 3D tech into Photoshop

Adobe has had its eye on 3D for years, and while 3D creation features have long been part of Photoshop, it’s no secret that it is still challenging terrain for designers.

Adobe is hoping to advance ease of use in 3D workflows with its purchase of Mixamo, a company that specializes in 3D.

Adobe plans to integrate Mixamo’s technology into Photoshop so designers can more easily create, customize, manipulate, rig and animate 3D objects as well as more easily employ ready-made components. Adobe’s research indicates that characters are a large growth category for 3D content and it envisions innovative uses for graphic design.

According to a blog post by Winston Hendrickson, vice president of digital imaging products:

Designers are increasingly being asked to create photo-realistic scenes that don’t exist in the real world. And while this is already being done in Photoshop today, we can push the envelope further to enable a level of precision like never before, and to make it easier for everyone to use.

First, the emergence of 3D scanning technology will drive demand for readily available, high quality 3D content. Second, hardware improvements make it much easier to work with 3D content on standard devices, even tablets. Finally, we see a marriage of high quality content and powerful tools geared toward graphic designers that make working with 3D more accessible than ever before.

Immediate benefits for Mixamo include reusing and customizing 3D models, flexible lighting, environment, perspective and materials adjustments and more photo realistic scenes.

That would also offer a greater number of options for both still and motion in packaging, concepts and pre-production prototypes.

Adobe has been working on several initiatives recently that are designed to enhance 3D ease of use.
