A year after launching, iPad newspaper The Daily finally comes to the iPhone

A year after launching for the iPad, the iOS tablet native newspaper The Daily is now available for iPhone.  Though the Murdoch empire may be under siege, it seems that its digital side is still alive and expanding.

The Daily in tablet form is a subscription only service charging charging a 99c per week or $39.99 per year. The iPhone app is free to download and offers a limited selection of articles for free. For those who wish to subscribe, the tariff on iPhone is $1.99 per month or $19.99 for a year.

7 sections will be updated each day including news, business, gossip, opinion and sports.  As with the tablet, the daily promises, ‘world-class editors and contributors’ as well as the ability to save and read later and sharing articles with friends via email, Twitter and Facebook.

The iPhone app carries multimedia material, the expected salacious headlines and on the free version, adverts run across the bottom of the screen.

As a standard news app it presents in a clean and accessible way and the usual tap and sweep gestures are easy to manage for navigating the material on a smaller device.

Although Murdoch himself may be deemed unfit to run a major international company and has put much of the company’s output behind paywalls, the slow and careful digital expansion might show an intelligence for the market.

Opening up free content in this way could be the gateway that readers need to roll over and buy a subscription.
