7digital to power T-Mobile Mall for US music fans

London-based digital music provider 7digital has announced a partnership that will see it power T-Mobile Mall’s music sales.

Launched in the UK in 2004, 7digital’s download store and mobile applications give consumers access to over 17 million MP3 tracks across Europe and North America. The service launched in the US back in 2009, and now it has announced that its platform will power T-Mobile Mall, the telecom giant’s digital storefront, giving US music fans access to tracks from the 4 major labels (Sony, Universal, Warner and EMI), as well as dozens of independent labels.

Users will be able to download DRM-free tracks and albums directly to their mobile device, with an option to ‘buy now’ and download later to the device or to another computer.

The 7digital platform consists of a suite of global music rights and technology features, which it makes available to other companies through an API, and it’s designed to simplify the integration of music downloads into third party efforts.

“Music discovery is increasingly important for our customers, especially with the phenomenal growth of smartphones, and the T-Mobile Mall gives our customers a simple way to make music purchases so songs can be enjoyed directly on their phone or other connected devices,” said Torrie Dorrell, Vice President of Applications, Content and Games at T-Mobile USA.

It’s been a busy year for 7digital, as we reported that it had released an Android smartphone app back in May, followed later by a dedicated app for Android tablets, after it had already announced that it was expanding its service into Australia and New Zealand in October.

With over 33m users, T-Mobile is the fourth largest mobile carrier in the US, so this is a big development for 7digital. “T-Mobile is a significant new partner for 7digital’s global business and we are very pleased to make available a full catalog of songs from all four major labels and leading independent labels to millions of T-Mobile customers,” says Vickie Nauman, Vice President for 7digital in North America.

In addition to T-Mobile, 7digital has also provided services to the likes of RIM, Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, Universal Music, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music.
