“The video itself is still in Flash underneath the controls,” the post said. “However, this is an important step to releasing the much-anticipated full HTML5 player.”
This is a big step for Twitch, mostly because Flash is buggy and inflexible across devices. Plus, it really sucks.
The company is following in the footsteps of another major online video haven. Youtube switched its default player to HTML5 in January of this year, citing the format’s recent adoption of Adaptive Bitrate (ABR).
Twitch’s big move to cut ties with Flash is another nail in the coffin for the perpetually vulnerable and generally annoying format.
