Thefuture.fm passes 1 million mix plays, and announces key hires from YouTube and more

Thefuture.fm has revealed that it has passed one million mix plays, as it announces three key hires from veterans who have worked at YouTube, GetGlue and Universal Music Group.

Just to recap, Thefuture.fm is an Internet radio platform that serves up music curated by some of the world’s top DJs (8,000 and counting), letting users search, discover, follow, purchase tracks and stream mixes. The service launched initially as Dubset in late 2011, before morphing into the platform we see today a few months back. You can perhaps think of Thefuture.fm as what Turntable.fm should’ve been (see previous coverage here).

It is a sweet platform, in that it automates the process of tracking mixed audio (legally), opening access for music fans to easily find mixtapes. It simultaneously removes the liability for DJs and advertisers who want to monetize the mixtape on the Web or at live events.

With one million mix plays under its belt, Thefuture.fm has now brought on board three industry veterans to “solidify its mission” to bring legal access to DJ music to the masses.

Michael Wenzel, YouTube’s previous lead frontend developer, joins as Chief Development Officer; Nic Luciano, former Lead Developer at GetGlue, is now the company’s Chief Technology Officer, whilst music industry marketing veteran, Chris Nagy,  joins as Senior Vice President of marketing and sales.

Nagy joins directly from CLN Ventures, a startup consulting firm he founded in 2008, which advised companies such as Grooveshark, Burton and Karmaloop. He has also worked at Universal Music Group, where he was supervisor of advertising, marketing and media services.

“We have been aggressively combing the tech, Web, music and other industries for veteran talent to build the best possible team,” says David Stein, founder and CEO of Thefuture.fm. “By adding Michael, Nic and Chris in this latest round of hires I am confident we are fast on our way to achieving our goals to build a disruptive internet radio platform and have a profound effect on the music industry.”

Thefuture.fm uses proprietary fingerprinting and rights flow-management technology, MixSCAN, to enable automated rights and royalty distribution to copyright holders.
