The Gogobot app has traditionally been known as the app you use to find interesting things while traveling. With today’s update, it’s hoping to grab more users that stay at home.
The GoGo This Week feature in the iOS and Android app showcases weekly events that are happening in your area based on the “tribes” (interest categories) you’ve picked in the app. The app surfaces these 10 to 15 events each week on the home page of your current location. It’s a bit like Foursquare’s restaurant suggestions but for events.
“We want you to know what’s happening this weekend and we create a smart, curated list based on your tribes and lifestyle,” said founder and CEO Travis Katz.
Initially the feature is only available in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, London, San Diego and Silicon Valley. The goal is to roll out the service to more cities in the coming months. But in order to do that, it needs to bring on editors for each city for the hand curated lists.
During my test of the app it showed me a night hike in Muir Woods, a place that has a Wheel of Karaoke night and a bike festival in Golden Gate park. None of which I was aware of and all I’m actually interested in checking out. Plus the app has another new feature to help me remember these events.
The bookmarking feature lets you save events you’re interested in to check out later. You can make multiple lists based on whatever tickles your fancy. If you’re already a user of the app it’s a good way to get you to use on a more regular basis. If you’re new to it, it’s a nice entry without the pre-requisite of travel.
