US-IT-COMPANY-YAHOO-LOGOYahoo is closing down its URL shortener on Wednesday, according to a blog post from the company.

The company’s take on and other link shorteners is getting the chop because it’s “not one of Yahoo!’s core competencies supporting our users’ Daily Habits,” the post explains.

Most of us at TNW have never come across the service, but any folks that do use it will need to find alternatives from November 20, after which no new links can be created. Yahoo says existing links will continue to redirect to their sources — although it ominously states it will “provide at least three months notice before making any further changes to the service,” which suggests a total cutoff is coming soon.
