Google Translate has already expanded its visual translation capabilities across many languages, but the team announced today that the company has made a breakthrough in translations to a particularly difficult language.
The Google Translate app, available for both iPhone and Android, has updated to accommodate instant text translations from English and German to Arabic.
TNW spoke with Otavio Good, a software engineer at Google Translate and the original author of realtime AR translator WordLens, a few months ago when Translate did its initial reading tool translation to seven languages. He noted that Arabic specifically was a challenge to develop for Google Translate.
“Arabic is in demand, but it’s very difficult,” he said.
In addition to adding Arabic the app now supports Split View with the latest iPad models.
“So if you’re sending an email or text and need to translate, you can see both apps at the same time. And it even works with text from online books or websites,” Barak Turovsky, Product Lead, Google Translate, said in the blog post.
The updates will be available today for iOS and Android.
