Google Maps update for iOS rolls out with iPad support, enhanced navigation and indoor mapping

Google has started gradually rolling out an updated version of Google Maps on iOS, after the new Google Maps for Android tablets and smartphones landed earlier this month.

The highlight of the new Google Maps on iOS is added support for larger touch-screens found on the iPad and iPad Mini, which has been long-awaited and will be warmly welcomed by many users.

According to 9to5 Mac, the new iOS version has enhanced navigation with live traffic updates, incident reports and dynamic rerouting — just like the Android version.

The report notes that there is also an Explore function for users to browse and find restaurants, hotels, bars and other places via the service — and the feature has been integrated with Zagat ratings and deals via Google Offers. The latest version also includes indoor mapping for shopping malls, transit stations and airports.

The new Google Maps hasn’t been made available in the US yet, though it has started rolling out to some countries in Asia, 9to5 Mac says. (The update is now available worldwide.)

Google launched an overhaul of its Maps service at its IO event in May, and following that it announced an acquisition of the mobile mapping service Waze for just over $1 billion last month. However, with the FTC probing the deal due to antitrust concerns, Google is thought to have been told to suspend any integration and links between the two services until its acquisition gets the green light.
