As if it isnât creepy enough to have an internet-connected microphone listening in on everything that goes on in your living room, Amazonâs Alexa assistant has been randomly bursting into laughter, according to some owners of Echo speakers and other Alexa-equipped gadgets.
Yeah, if I didnât read about this and heard a laugh while alone in my apartment, Iâd hotfoot it out of there right quick. Hereâs what that sounds like:
So Alexa decided to laugh randomly while I was in the kitchen. Freaked @SnootyJuicer and I out. I thought a kid was laughing behind me. pic.twitter.com/6dblzkiQHp

Thankfully, Amazon believes itâs figured out the problem. Basically, Alexa is being triggered by commands that it hears as, âAlexa, laugh,â at which point it chortles. The company said in a statement that itâs now altering that trigger so as to prevent future LOLs:
In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase âAlexa, laugh.â We are changing that phrase to be âAlexa, can you laugh?â which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance âAlexa, laugh.â We are also changing Alexaâs response from simply laughter to âsure, I can laughâ followed by laughter.
The update canât come soon enough. Itâs likely to be a server-side fix, so hopefully you wonât have to do anything to keep your Alexa-powered device from scaring the bejeezus out of you.
