Facebook changes the only unique Slingshot feature: You can now send unlocked photos and videos

Facebook today updated its Slingshot app for Android and iOS, changing the only feature that makes the app unique. When you receive a photo or video, you may not be required to send something back to see the content.

Senders can now choose whether they want you to send them a shot in return to unlock their photo or video. In addition to the usual bug fixes, the changelog states “Sling a shot to see a shot? Not necessarily! After shooting a photo or video, now you can choose whether to sling it as a locked or unlocked shot.”

Following the failure of Poke, Slingshot is Facebook’s second attempt to mimic Snapchat. While there was some interest initially, it has largely died down and the company is experimenting to see what might spur interest.
