Skype dishes out free WiFi in Spain to mark Mobile World Congress

Skype has a penchant for giving out free WiFi access to mark big events – to celebrate Internet Week Europe last year, it gave out 60-minutes of free Internet access through Skype WiFi hotspots. Whilst Stateside, New Yorkers were given a big freebie over New Year, and 50 US airports were targeted over Christmas.

Next up, to celebrate the mobile industry’s flagship event, Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Skype is giving everyone in Spain two hours of free access with Skype WiFi, covering more than 24,000 wireless hotspots around the country – at airports, bars, cafés, hotels, wherever. From February 26th through to March 1st, if you are in Spain, you can tap in to 4 x 30-minute sessions throughout the week.

To get started, you must have the latest version of Skype for Windows, Skype for Mac or Skype WiFi app on your iOS device. Unfortunately, there isn’t a version for Android yet. You then connect to the ‘Skype WiFi’ hotspot through your device’s WiFi settings, and take it from there.

The Next Web will be out and about at MWC next week, and we’ll be bringing you all the best bits from the event. And we may even tap into some of this free WiFi while we’re at it…
